About Me

Six Year Old Ethan A.K.A. Spider-man

Origin Story

Art has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was inspired to started to start drawing by my love for comic books. When I was about four years old, I read my first comic (I don't remember exactly what it was, but let's be honest here, it was definitely Batman), and I instantly fell in love with the whole medium. Ever since then, I have dedicated myself to practicing drawing, with the goal of one day becoming a professional comic artist. I will not stop practicing and putting my work out into the world until I achieve that goal, and even then I won't stop. Comics have become my whole life, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Why Comic Books?

If you're like me, people are often asking you why you like comic books so much, or saying, "I thought comic books were just for kids," and you're never quite able to explain it. Well I've got you covered. Next time that happens, feel free to say this:

  • Unlike a movie, comics are not constrained by budget or the limits of CGI. Anyone can make a comic, and if you can dream it, you can draw it. If an artist want's Galactus to blow up a planet they can do it with just a pencil and a piece of piece of paper, as opposed to blowing 5 million dollars on special effects.

  • Comics combine art and writing. Having a wide variety of writers producing comics at any given moment gives you plenty of different options for stories and characters, and enables you to read titles that speak to you personally once you find a writer you connect with. A movie director only produces 1-3 movies a year at best, but a comic writer can write over 20 books in that same amount of time. In addition to the large number of writers, having thousands of artists working in comics not only allows you to pick and choose what artists you like, but it also lets you see your favorite characters drawn in multiple different styles. Combining these two elements doesn't just make for the greatest storytelling on earth, it also ensures that there is a comic book that you will love reading at any given moment.

  • Comics make you work for it. What I mean is, reading a comic book is an activity that you have to dedicate both your time and your brain to. It's easy enough to pull out your phone during a movie and start texting, but but reading a comic engages your brain, and forces you to commit to a singular activity. Reading a comic is healthy because you are dedicating your whole being to one thing. Reading is also a far more productive use of your time than binging a TV show or scrolling on instagram. This one may sound snobby, but let's be honest, it's true. Modern people just don't read.

Like I said, feel free to quote me on that any time, I, for one, can't overstate how often I am questioned about my love for comics.

Nate Powell also makes some great points about the benefits of comics in this strip.

Mythology

I largely credit this book for sealing the deal in terms of making me sure that I wanted to become a comic artist. Mythology, if somehow you don't know, is a collection of the unmatched artwork of Alex Ross for the DC Comics universe. I got my first copy of this beautiful book (yes, I have multiple) when I was about 8, and I poured over it. This book became my bible, and even today I could stare at a Ross painting endlessly (you don't even want to know how long it took me to read Kingdom Come).

The greatest Superman illustration of all time and the cover of Mythology, you know who it's by.

Justice League: Cry For Justice

This is the first comic I really fell in love with. I remember reading this and thinking Mauro Cascioli's illustrations were unbelievable, and after a recent re-read of the book, I realized I still do. This comic, written by James Robinson, remains one of my favorite Justice League stories.

Batman and Me

There's never been a problem in my life that reading a Batman comic won't solve. I never mention him when people ask my top 5 superheroes, because it seems so obvious to me that he is the greatest superhero of all time. He may be fictional, but Batman has saved me multiple times in a very real way.

My Top 3's

Comics

1. Five Ghosts

This comic is just unbelievably fun. It perfectly does what I'm trying to do with my comic APE. Chris Mooneyham's dynamic artwork mixed with an incredible story by Frank J. Barbiere is a recipe for awesome.

2. Punk Rock Jesus

Sean Murphy never ceases to amaze me. He is able to produce such high quality artwork, and still maintain an unreal work output. If it wasn't certain already, Punk Rock Jesus proves that he is one of the greats.

3. Batman: Hush

Not Just my favorite Batman comic, but my third favorite comic of all time. Drawn perfectly. Written perfectly. A true sequential masterpiece.

Movies

1. Everything Everywhere all at once

I have no words. I laughed, I cried, and I witnessed the greatest fight sequences in cinematic history. This movie means everything to me, it is a work of art.

2. The Terminator

I used to watch this movie every time I was home sick from school, which was often. James Cameron's innovative cinematography is straight out of a comic book. This glorious film deserves every bit of praise it gets.

3. WHIPLASH

God I love this movie. It perfectly represents the struggle of trying to find a balance of life, work, and practice as a musician. I may not be a musician, but the the themes of this movie apply just as well to visual artists. This movie is immersive and inspiring, and I will never not enjoy it.

Shows

1. Peacemaker

I wanna taste it.

2. Always Sunny in PHILADELPHIA

Pure comedic genius. I've watched this show 100 times and it never gets old.

3. The Boys

Hilariously grotesque and full of action packed awesomeness. Good god Homelander is scary! Perfect show, perfect comic adaptation.

Bands

1. Led ZEPPELIN

Every single song they've ever recorded is perfect. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page really made sure that all other bands are dwarfed when compared to Led Zeppelin.

3 Favorite Songs: Since I've Been Loving You, Over the Hills and Far Away, Tangerine

2. Rolling Stones

A four man music making monster! This band really stands the test of time. People call them the greatest rock band in history for a reason!

3 Favorite Songs: Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Beast of Burden, Slave

3. Queen

The band, the myth the legend. I have been in love with Queen's music my entire life, and I doubt that will ever change. This group is a force of pure musical genius.

3 Favorite Songs: Killer Queen, Don't Stop Me Now, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy

MAKE GOOD ART

This speech has been in the back of my mind since the first time I ever heard it. Neil Gaiman is intelligent, inspiring, and without a doubt one of comics' greatest writers.

  • Be a pleasure to work with

  • Produce great artwork

  • Turn in work on time

Pick two.

If you haven't heard this speech, stop everything you are doing and give it a listen. Actually, even if you have heard it listen again and thank me later.

School and Training

The Kubert school

Over the past couple years, I have attended a number of online courses at the Kubert School. By my account, I've taken Basic Drawing 1, Basic Drawing 2, Inking Comics, and Producing Comics. Despite the fact that they were held online, these classes were tremendously helpful, and I still felt like I got to know the teachers and students in each class to some degree. In addition to the online classes, I will also be taking the Kubert School Summer Intensive in person this July. This a whole month of drawing, writing, inking, lettering, and coloring comics 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. This won't just be a great way to learn about creating comics, it will be a way for me to get to know the school a bit, which will be good since I am seriously considering Kubert as an option for college. Between the online classes, the upcoming intensive, and potentially attending it for college, The Joe Kubert School has been and will continue to be a major part of my art education.

Proko

Stan Prokopenko's online courses have helped me improve quickly, and have provided a convenient and excellent way to learn drawing. I had been watching Stan's videos on youtube for years, and after a while I decided to purchase a few of his premium courses off his website. Best. Decision. Ever. I purchased (or more accurately my dad purchased for me) the Anatomy Course, the Portrait Drawing Course, and the Figure Drawing Course. These courses also came with over 1,000 professional model photos to draw from, which I reference constantly. All three of these courses are phenomenal, but the Figure Drawing Course in particular has been a massive resource for me ever since I got it. I would boldly say that I have learned more from the Proko Figure Drawing course than I have from any other art class, art book, or online class. In the course, Stan masterfully lays out an entire figure drawing curriculum which gracefully leads you from figure drawing basics, all the way to professional level figure drawing skills. I have grown tremendously as an artist just by following the courses on Proko, it has been a crucial part of my art learning.

To see some of the artwork I've made using Proko, check out the Proko Page in this websites portfolio tab.

ART BOOKS

In addition to all the art classes I've taken, Art Books have been a hugely important resource for me.

Draftsmen

In 2019, Stan Prokopenko and Marshall Vandruff created one of the greatest art podcasts of all time, Draftsmen. I have been listening to this podcast since episode 1, and every episode from then right up until the final episode hit it out of the park! Not only are they fun and easy to listen to, but they are also incredibly informative. I feel like I have learned an enormous amount about teaching, learning, and creating art just by having this on in the background while I draw. If you are interested in art of any kind I cannot recommend this podcast enough!

BOston comics roundtable

The Boston Comics Roundtable (BCR) is an extraordinary group of people who host weekly meetings to discuss, present, create, and critique comics. I have been attending these meetings since 2019, and it has proven a great resource for networking and getting feedback on my current comic book endeavours. The meetings used to be held in person at Lesley University, but since COVID, they have been hosting their meetings through Discord. If you are interested interested in comics in any way, it is a no brainer to join their group. You can find them through facebook, their discord server, or their website.
